we know it is profitable to have bike and pedestrian friendly streets, but also because it is healthy for our environment and our human capital, improving quality of life for all of us because Tu Salud Si Cuenta! (Your Health Matters!).

I have such fond memories of places I have lived without a car, or with limited use of my car. When you use your bike or feet for transport, you really get to know a community, the people out on the street, the flora and fauna, the local businesses you feel more at home, and you are healthier and happier. I even used to ride my bike in Brownsville quite a bit not for a "work out", but just to get around. It was challenging I admit, since drivers here are unaccustomed to bicycles or even pedestrians for that matter, and clearly the streets weren't designed for anything but cars. But I lived in West Brownsville and could reasonably ride my bike to my kids' school, church, the store and my job at the University. I didn't do it often enough, but when I did I felt so free and alive and self sufficient.

As a student many years ago at the University of California, I didn't own a car. I rode my bike from my off campus apartment a few miles away to class every morning, to the grocery store, back to the library to study, to my job at a restaurant waiting tables in the evenings, and everywhere else I needed to go. It's not that there wasn't traffic, or that it was a perfect design for cyclists. In fact it wasn't. These were busy Southern Californian streets in the 1980's. The difference is that it wasn't considered weird, or sporty or anything really to use your bike as transportation. This has always been true in many parts of the world.

Tu Salud Si Cuenta! is a campaign of the University of Texas School of Public Health and Transforming Texas to reduce obesity and associated chronic diseases and improve quality of life.

Here in the Valley we are a bit "backward" around the use of anything but cars to move ourselves around. We think of cycling only as a "sport" for fit people with tight fitting shorts and brightly colored jerseys whizzing along in packs at high speed. We forget that bicycles are a great, affordable, healthy way to move around, and that our bodies are really designed to move themselves by walking, running, and riding. There are so many benefits to creating cycling and pedestrian friendly communities.

We need public support to move our Valley communities in this direction, first and foremost because New Era Cap Florida Marlins

through town from FM511 to Linear Park and the Federal Courthouse downtown. There were tense moments riding through speeding truck traffic and construction zones near the expressway, but once on the trail it was downright peaceful.

Brownsville is moving forward with an ambitious long term hike and bike trail plan that will ultimately place every resident of the city within a half mile of a connected system of protected trails so we can really use them to get to and from places we need to go. City commissioners are now fighting for the neighborhoods they represent, and rightly so, to be given priority for bike paths. Grant money is coming in to implement this plan piece by piece. BMetro, the public transport system in Brownsville, is adding routes and policies to accommodate bikes and pedestrians. When we moved further out of town, I gave up my dream of using my bike for transport since both the distance and the traffic configuration between my home and work seemed insurmountable. But the other day I got a "bee in my bonnet" as my mother says, and decided to try riding my bike to work again. You would have thought I had climbed Mount Everest by the reactions of people as I rolled my old mountain bike into my office building. "You came all the way from your house!" Honestly, the distance is just a bit over 10 miles. You do not need to be in any particular shape to make a ride like that if you are not in it for speed. If you know how to ride a bike, and don't have a major medical condition, injury or disability, this is really not something anyone should be impressed Jordan Caps 2017 with and it speaks volumes that my colleagues were. We really limit ourselves with our dependency on cars.

Blue sunny sky, warm breeze, graceful white herons dipped their long necks into the resacas under the trail bridges. When I rode next to a field of wild sunflowers, hundreds of birds lifted off simultaneously. I passed numerous walkers, joggers and cyclists on the trail from all walks of life. We all greeted each other with a nod and grin as if to say "Those poor people trapped in their metal cars don't know the beautiful day they are missing!" I veered off and stopped for a quick coffee about halfway to my destination, and then later bought a 25 cent purse from a sweet old lady at a garage sale in front of a tiny shotgun shack on Tyler street where a flock of parrots chattered in the trees above. Riding your bike makes you want to stop and enjoy what a community has to offer, which is why cities with more cycling and pedestrian friendly design are more prosperous and attract visitors who spend more per capita than car bound tourists do.

A Better Way to Move About

In fact recent studies have shown that cities that focus on this relatively inexpensive infrastructure reap the greatest economic benefit and attract visitors who spend per capita several times as much as car bound tourists. Economic vitality has increased on streets with protected bike lanes in cities as congested as Manhattan and cycling infrastructure grows the bottom line everywhere in America these days. One example is a street with added protected bike lanes increased retail sales by 49% and decreased injuries to all street users by 35% ("Green Dividend" study, New York City Department of Transportation NYCDOT, Cortright, 2012).

The challenges I faced had to do with traffic, space to ride and broken glass litter along the frontage roads and city streets. I decided to add a couple of miles to my route so I could ride calmly on the protected Battlefield Trail, which runs most of the north south route Air Jordan Hats And Caps
