September 1962: The 64th TCW shoulders the task of testing and developing procedures for the Air Force's Skyhook project, which enables in flight retrieval of personnel or cargo by attaching the retrieval target to a cable with a balloon at the opposite end in the air. The results still are seen in the Special Operation Command's MC 130 Combat Talon aircraft.

March 1973: The squadron Atlanta Hawks Hats New Era

and C 130D models, the latter equipped for snow and ice takeoffs/landings. With this capability, the squadron undertakes its first mission Distant Early Warning line support on the icecap of Greenland.

Feb. 4, 1976: Dyess C 130s assist Guatemalan relief after 7.5 magnitude earthquake. and establish a presence in Africa, in the Republic of Mali.

Early 1970s: As the Vietnam War winds down, the 516th adopts a revamped routine of deploying to Europe that would last for 23 years. After France, the squadrons deploy to Mildenhall, England, then to Rhein Main Air Base, Germany, as Delta Squadron, and back to Mildenhall. The deployed squadrons support NATO in multiple exercises across Europe.

1992: The 463rd Wing deploys to Mombasa, Kenya, to support "Operation Provide Relief" and then "Operation Restore Hope," which provide relief to the people of war torn and famine ravaged Somalia. Restore Hope commences in August and Restore Hope in December, continuing into 1993.

June 1, 1972: The Air Force activates the 463rd TAW, which is moved from Clark AB.

October 1972: The 463rd provides emergency supplies to Israel during the Yom Kippur War.

Mid 1960s: The 516th's focus shifts to Southeast Asia, as the war in Vietnam escalates, although many 516th troops and planes still follow a rotational deployment to Europe and aid the Army and the NASA Gemini program. A practical necessity of the war causes the Air Force to permanently change the paint scheme of the C Nike Hat For Kids 130 from a shiny metallic look to a painted camouflage (and the gray of today's C 130s). The wing's primary role in Vietnam is to keep fighter squadrons supplied with parts and maintenance. Its other airlift mission is troop movement. Most deployments are based out of Clark Air Base in the Philippines and air bases in Japan. Combat missions are flown to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. Still other missions involve humanitarian aid, such as supplying relief to victims of Hurricane Camille in Biloxi, Miss., in mid August 1969.

November 1963: The 516th participates in Operation Shiksha, a joint training exercise in both India and Iran.

1991 92: After the completion of Desert Storm, the 463rd maintains a presence in the region, including continued deployments to Saudi Arabia to support "Operation Southern Watch," which begins Aug. 27, 1992, to enforce Iraqi compliance with a United Nations resolution demanding the end of repression of Iraqi citizens by the Hussein regime. A "no fly" zone is created over Iraqi air space.

May 7, 1981: The second "all out effort" mass formation takes to the air in just 10 minutes.

Oct. 24 Nov. 2, 1983: The 463rd takes part in the invasion of Grenada, dubbed "Operation Urgent Fury." The wing's first C 130 lands on the Caribbean island about six hours after the initial invasion. A pilot of the 772nd Squadron lands at Port Salilnas to deliver ammunition to support AC 130 Spectre gunships. On Oct. 26, three other of the wing's aircraft fly fuel bladders and additional fuel to the island. Their initial attempts to land at the airport are aborted because of hostile ground fire.

Oct. 22, 1962: 235 airmen of the 64th TCW deploy in less than 12 hours for direct contribution in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Most deploy to Florida, where 107 missions launch.

Jan. 11, 1972: 516th TAW is inactivated.

Late 1980s: The 463rd flies training missions all over the United States, including California, Nevada, Georgia, Alaska and Hawaii.

May 1961: The first Dyess crew to fly an aero medevac mission carries a patient from then Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland, to Kastrup Airport (now Copenhagen Airport), Denmark.

Aug. 28, 1985: Airman 1st Class Owen M. Thomas, a maintainer, dies when he is overcome by fuel fumes under a C 130 wing.

Throughout 1962: The 17th and 18th squadrons execute major missions, including airlift support for President Kennedy to Mexico City and Project Mercury for NASA. Crews deploy to the Indian Ocean as downrange rescue recovery for space missions.

participates in Operation Homecoming the release of prisoners of war from North Vietnamese prisons. C 130 crews fly prisoners from all across North Vietnam to Hanoi, where they are airlifted out of North Vietnam by C 141s. Forest Service against wildfires in California and Montana.

May 8, 1961: The 17th TCS uses both C 130A New York Yankees Cap Blue

Jan. 1, 1963: The 64th TCW is inactivated with the activation of the 516th Tactical Airlift Wing, which commands the 18th, 345th, 346th and 347th Troop Carrier Squadrons. The 17th TCS is inactivated July 1.

Sept. 19, 1985: The 463rd delivers 217 tons of relief supplies to Mexico City after a series of massive earthquakes measuring up to 8.5 magnitude devastate the Mexican capital.

August 1990: The 463rd shelves routine deployments to Europe and returns all aircraft to Dyess within a matter of days after the Aug. 2 Iraqi invasion of neighboring Kuwait. Dyess crews then deploy to Mildenhall, England, and Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia, to support operations "Desert Shield" (Aug. 7, 1990 Jan. 17, 1991) and "Desert Storm," which started Jan. 17. 1991. The 773rd helps to deploy three Army divisions, a critical Air Defense Artillery Brigade and elements of other units.

Oct. 1, 1993: The 463rd is inactivated and its troops and planes are placed under the 7th Bomb Wing, which includes Dyess AFB's B 1Bs and C 130s. Within the first year, Dyess C 130s perform a variety of airlift missions in Europe and the Persian Gulf.

Oct. 22, 1980: The first "all out effort" in mass formation training involves 35 C 130s making airdrops on Dyess' Marrion Drop Zone.
